Hormonal contraception: "The pill"

Contraception with hormones, whether as a pill, a ring or a patch, is the best-known form of contraception. The pill prevents ovulation. Less mucous membrane builds up in the uterus. A very important point is whether the patient has any particular risk factors. In our practice, only micro-pills with the lowest risk of thrombosis are prescribed, and this is done after a careful assessment of the patient's medical history.

There is a wide variety of pills. The decisive criterion, after risk factors have been excluded, is the skin condition. Contraception with a skin-friendly pill significantly improves acne after about three months. Painful periods can be significantly reduced with the pill as contraception or avoided altogether with the so-called long cycle. Contraception during breastfeeding or contraception for women with special risks is possible with the so-called mini-pill.

Mirena®, Levosert®, Kyleena® and Jaydess®

All hormonal IUDs have an almost localized effect. Little mucous membrane builds up in the uterus so that no pregnancy can implant.

With Mirena® or Levosert® there is spotting at the beginning, which can last up to six months, after which the woman has hardly any bleeding.

Kyleena® has been available since 2017, has a duration of five years and releases fewer hormones locally into the uterus.

Jaydess® is the smallest hormonal IUD, it stays in place for three years. Jaydess® is ideal as an alternative to the pill for women aged 22 and over. Removal of Mirena®, Jaydess® and Kyleena® is painless if the thread is visible. In order to make insertion as easy as possible, we offer our patients various facilities as an extra service.

We do not want to rule out the influences on the soul in terms of depression and anxiety that were reported in the press in 2017, but they do not correspond to our many years of experience.
